Fifteen minutes from downtown Phoenix, stands squaw peak, a volcanic relic that rises about 1,200 feet above the valley floor. The new, and more correct, name for the peak is Piestewa.
Unfortunately, the trail is shared by many, many visitors on any given day, but once you reach the summit, there are scattered outcrops and geologic formations to explore in relative solitude. From the summit, there are views of the greater Phoenix metro area and the Superstition Mountains.
Access: from downtown, take highway 51 north and exit at Lincoln Dr, east. The access road to the trailhead is clearly labeled, "east squaw peak dr."
