Bryce Canyon National Park is renowned for its endless aisles of hoodos, the tall, slender rock spires that cover the canyon floor. The view from the rim overlooking miles upon miles of these structures is awe-inspiring. Even more inspiring is the trek down into the canyon, where the hoodoos turn into giants towering over you.
If you have a full day to spend in the park, Fairyland Loop will allow you to experience the transition from a beautiful view over the canyon to an up-close encounter with the hoodoos. It's an 8-mile loop that begins (and ends) at Fairyland Point. Most hikers complete the loop in 4-5 hours.
From Fairyland Point, the trail follows the rim before descending into the canyon. It winds through hoodoos and then ascends back up to the rim to Sunset Point. From there it ties into the Rim Trail leading back to Fairyland Point.
About 4 miles into the loop, there is a sign for the turnoff to Tower Bridge. The short detour is definitely worth it.
There are patches of shade dispersed throughout the loop, but the majority is under full sun-exposure. Be sure to carry plenty of water.
While Fairyland Loop keeps you in the North end of the park, it shows you the best Bryce Canyon has to offer.
Easy-to-follow maps are available in the visitors center.
Camping: The North Campground allows you to start Fairyland Loop from the Rim Trail. Cost is $15/night.
