Snow Lake

Snow Lake is one of the most popular hikes in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness- and for good reason. It is both beautiful and accessible. However, it tends to be overcrowded during summer months, so experiencing it in winter is the way to go. Not only are there less people, the trail is transformed into a winter wonderland and the lake, completely frozen over, truly lives up to its name. The way the snow contrasts with the evergreens and rocky mountainsides is magical, and frozen waterfalls and patches of icicles along the way are breathtaking.

During the first week of December, the trail was in excellent condition. Although completely covered in snow, snowshoes were not necessary. My waterproof boots provided sufficient traction, and as long as I stayed on the trail, there was no need for gaiters.

The full hike is 7.2 miles roundtrip with an 1800-ft. elevation gain, and takes you all the way to the lake's shore.

Access: The trailhead is located at Snoqualmie Pass. From Seattle, take I-90 East and get off at Exit 52 (Snoqualmie Pass West. Turn left and follow the road to the Alpental Ski Area parking Lot. The Snow Lake trailhead is just across the road from the parking lot.

The trail leads you to the edge of the lake, tempting some to walk out on the ice.

As pictured, the trail's condition did not require snowshoes.

Icicles along the way.
