The Alvord Desert, located in southeast Oregon, is one of the most desolate and unique areas in the entire state. The Alvord Desert sits to the southeast of Steens Mountain, a fault-block mountain, known for its enormous gorges and snow fed creeks and rivers. The desert floor itself, provides a variety of recreation opportunities, including camping, hiking, and even land sailing. It's also possible to drive your car onto the desert floor and explore the land surrounding it.
The Alvord Hot Springs, located a few hundred yards above the Alvord Desert was previously free to access, but now requires a $5 day use fee. The area surrounding the desert is either privately owned ranch-land or land managed by the BLM Burns District. Mann Lake, just north of the desert playa, provides opportunities for camping and trout fishing. At night the Alvord Desert is one of the best locations in the state for star gazing thanks to its rural location and no light pollution.

Access to Fields-Denio Road is 110 miles to the south of Burns, Oregon via State Highway 205. Also, The turnoff for Fields-Denio Road is only a couple miles to the north of the small community of Fields. Field's has an all-in-one gas station, cafe, store, and small motel known as Fields Station. Fields and the Alvord Desert are approximately 235 miles to the southeast of Bend, Oregon.
