In early March, the EHC Outdoor Leadership Program went on our annual expedition. This year we chose Big Bend National Park. This photo essay shows some of the terrain we encountered on the first two days our trek. 2011-2012 has been one of the driest periods EVER in the park. We had to drive on an unmaintained road, the day before we started hiking, to stash water containers.
I lost my camera to a Tinaja (more details on that in my next blog post) - so ALL photo credit to the talented Jessie Daddio.

The one place water flowed in West Big Bend (aside from the Rio Grande): Tornillo Creek. The water has an unusually high calcium content, preventing it from being a safe source of treatable water. |

First night: we came across a mountain lion "den" while looking for a campsite. There were fresh droppings, cat-prints and many mammal bones. |

For the love of Texas.
